What is Contract Packaging?
A lot of manufacturers find it more cost effective to outsource the packaging of their products off site, rather than set up expensive packaging operations in-house.
This is when they will contract with a contract packaging service. Contract packaging companies will package and label a manufacturers product for them, usually providing specialized applications such as clamshell or blister packaging, that the manufacturer is not set up to do.
Some packaging companies will even prepare and send products directly to the customers, take the orders, package the products, and then report the shipment.

These packages will then usually be placed through a rigorous testing process to ensure their strength and durability all the way to the market. Once this testing is complete the project is ready to begin.
Machinery is used to fill and seal the products, but when automated processes are not possible or cost-effective, the contract packaging service will also use custom hand-assembly to produce, fill or seal the products.
Different Types of Packaging
With today's packaging technology, there are countless options in packaging and labeling products. The packaging can range from simple and low-end, to complex, high-end clamshell and blister packaging. There are almost countless ways to package products, but the most common types of contract packaging are putting products into bottles, cans, cartons, boxes, bags or pouches.
Types of custom packaging are:

Blister packages – Blister packages are solid vacuum formed transparent plastic packages (usually PVC) formed around a mold of the product and has a paperboard or other type of solid backing that can be opened.

Clamshell packages – Clamshell packages are formed transparent plastic packages (usually PVC) that have one or more hinges.

Shrink banding – Shrink banding wraps the package with plastic wrapping bands that are then heated to shrink and fit tightly.

Shrink Wrapping – Shrink (or Skin) wrapping, uses a protective wrapping to enclose the entire package in a protective plastic wrap that is then heated to shrink.

Stretch Wrapping – Stretch (or Over) wrapping, uses large sheets to package groups of products such as cans, bottles and other small containers together.
All these forms of packaging are designed use intense brightly colored graphics and artwork to attract attention to the products and convey product information, create branding and produce impulse buying.
