What is Folding Carton?
Paperboard Folding Carton is the most common form of secondary retail packaging (Secondary Packaging: a retail package that holds a packaged good whose primary purposes to promote and display the product.) The versatility and economy found in folding cartons are unparallel. Different papers, inks, coatings, windowing and stampings provide a variety of options. Vacuum formed trays and blisters can be used as inserts to give an upscale or modern look.

A Folding Carton is a product container of varying sizes and shapes, typically made from heavy paperboard or small corrugate. The paperboard or corrugate is printed with artwork and graphics then the board is cut, creased, folded and glued, then usually shipped to the customer flat, where they fill it with product for distribution to the retail market. Folding Cartons can range from the simplest all-paperboard carton printed with company and product info, to dramatic, dynamic cartons with intense graphics, plastic windows and interior structures and designs.
Folding cartons are the lightest in weight among other forms of packaging. Prototypes are easy to create, and the final product is quick to produce. It is simple to fill, seal and stack, making it very efficient to ship. Embossing, printing on metalized and holographic laminations are also possible options.
Materials
There are two basic substrates used to produce paperboard-folding cartons: Virgin Fiber and Recycled Fiber or Combination. Those two materials are used to make two basic types of paperboard-folding cartons: Coated and Uncoated. Below is a detailed list of the able paperboard:
Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS)
SBS is a bleached paperboard made from mostly virgin bleached wood pulp
SBS Kaolin Coated
Kaolin is a clay coating placed on SBS to improve printing
SBS Kaolin Coated 2-sided
Kaolin is a clay coating placed on SBS to improve printing
CUK (CNK/SUS)
Similar to SBS but both sizes are Kraft (brown)
Polyethylene (PE) resin coated SBS
A PE coat is placed on SBS to protect against moisture and water
Uncoated Recycled Paperboard
Made from 100% recycled paper
A cost effective packaging option
Coated Recycled Paperboard

History of Folding Cartons

Before the early 1800's almost all products were produced and sold on the local level and most products were sold and distributed in whatever container was available. Once the infrastructure for distribution beyond local markets began to develop and demand for product caught up with and exceeded the supply, manufacturing and packaging became necessary to get product to consumers. The age of Merchandising was born.

Manufacturers quickly realized the power and functionality of folding cartons. Packaging in folding cartons offered many immediate benefits to both manufacturers and consumers. The manufacturer could use the package to brand the company name and product and provide information and extol the virtues of the product. It also was the ideal vehicle and container to get the product to the consumer in an attractive container and with minimal product loss due to damage during distribution. The consumer was assured they were receiving a quality, untainted product directly from the manufacturer.

Paperboard cartons began being produced on a local level around 1839, when Boston jeweler, Aaron L. Dennison began making setup boxes for himself and selling them to other Boston jewelers. Within 10 years his business had expanded to include a wide assortment of boxes for other small products and other box-making plants had sprung up and developed specialized equipment that helped speed up production. The box-making business was underway. It wasn't long before it would be taken a step further and corrugated packaging would develop to ship large quantities of the folding cartons of product to the retailer and consumer.

Folding Cartons have come a long way from their simple beginnings in a jewelry store. The technology is changing daily and now almost anything you can imagine can be done with folding cartons. The printing and graphic options are stunning, they are cost effective and extremely versatile as well as strong and durable. Folding Cartons are graphically intense and eye catching, and separate your products from the others on crowded store shelves to help increase sales dramatically. Folding Cartons are also primarily green packaging, they are environmentally friendly and have an extremely high recycling and recovery record.
