Corrugate is made from paper with an arched layer known as the medium (each arch is known as a flute) between flat sheets called a Liner. There are many types of corrugate available, each with different flute sizes and thicknesses.
Corrugate is most commonly made out of paperboard, a robust, extremely durable paper-like material, usually over ten mils (0.010 inch) thick. Other types of paper can also be used sometimes to make corrugate, but paperboard is the most common.
Packaging and shipping containers are typically constructed out of three sheets of paperboard. The first sheet is the familiar multi-arched sheet that is called the medium. This sheet is actually row after row of arches (called flutes) which is then sandwiched between two flat sheets of paperboard called a Liner.

| Corrugate offers thousands of possible combinations of board types, flute sizes (caliper), basis weight, adhesives, treatment and coatings, including flame retardant and static control protection. |
|
| Corrugate offers excellent tear, tensile and burst strength to withstand shipping pressures. It resists impact, drop and vibration damage while offering uniform stacking and weight distribution so the load stays put, regardless of the form of transportation. |

The History of Corrugate
Corrugate is unquestionably one of the most ingenious concepts and inventions of all time. It has revolutionized the way business gets their product to market and has become a common part of our daily lives. How many times a day do you come in contact with a corrugated package, container or display of some kind?
Corrugate was first patented in England in 1856 and was designed to be used as a liner for the tall hats of the time, in order to give them rigidity and support. The corrugated container, or box, would not be invented until 1890 and would be patented by Robert Gair, a Scottish-born Brooklyn printer and bag maker that, like many other great innovations, discovered it quite by accident. As Gair was printing an order of seed bags, a ruler used to crease the bags slipped and cut the bag. Gair quickly realized he could both crease and cut the boards in one operation. By the beginning of the twentieth century corrugated containers and boxes were replacing the custom wooden shipping containers used up to that time.
Corrugated containers and boxes were first used primarily for glassware, pottery and fragile products that could be easily damaged in transit. It was quickly adapted for use to ship produce, which revolutionized the way farmers got their product to market and reduced the massive amount of damaged and bruised produce that was common before it use.
Single-sided (single-face) corrugated board is constructed out of just two sheets of paperboard, the fluted corrugated medium, and only one flat sheet. Linerboard is commonly used to add an extra layer of protection in packaging either on the top, bottom or sides, or can be used in between products in a container.
Versatility of Corrugate Packaging
What gives corrugate it's unique versatility are the thousands of different combinations of sizes, strengths and treatments you can apply, that can give you literally any package you need. The versatility of corrugate is limited only by what you need it for. We can custom design corrugated boxes and containers or design custom packaging for any application or any product you have.
There are any number of sizes and thicknesses you can achieve with corrugate. This starts with the thickness and strength of the paper (basis weight), then the size and thickness of the flutes (caliper). You can get anything from super thin to super thick heavy-duty corrugated packaging.
There are also numerous treatments and coatings available such as flame retardants, anti-static and even wax-type coatings.
Corrugate is used almost exclusively for packaging and shipping because of it is light weight and it has superior tear and burst strength that can withstand most shipping pressures. Corrugate will withstand impact, drop and other damage and offers uniform stacking and weight distribution, allowing for easier, more stable transport.
When printed with graphics or logos, corrugated containers become mobile advertisements and create product and company image wherever they go. Corrugated POP displays are graphic intense eye-catching units that can be set up quickly and easily and then can easily be recycled.
Printing on Corrugate
Another advantage to corrugate is it's flexibility when it comes to printing, a wide range of printing options can be used on corrugate.
• Flexography or Direct Print
• Lithograph
• Digital Printing
Corrugated packaging has come a long way since it's simple but ingenious beginnings, and now almost anything you can imagine can be done with corrugate. The printing and graphic options are stunning. Corrugated containers are cost effective and extremely versatile as well as extremely strong and durable. Corrugated POP displays are graphically intense and eye catching, and separate your products from the others on crowded store shelves to help increase sales dramatically. Corrugate is also green packaging, it is environmentally friendly and has an extremely high recycling and recovery record.
